TASK 3 : TYPE EXPLORATION & APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Investigate how typefaces are used in your field, identify areas that could be improved, and come up with creative solutions or combinations to enhance existing typefaces. To do this effectively, you'll need to research your area of interest, analyze how type is currently used, and find potential weaknesses or areas that need further exploration. Then, you can propose creative solutions or improvements.

The final result could be a newly designed font and its application in a specific context, or it could be an exploratory process that addresses a problem or enhances existing practices. Your work can take various forms related to the issue you're addressing, such as animations, 3D designs, printed materials, ambient installations, projections, movie titles, game titles, or the use of different materials.

Task

1. Proposal of Ideas

Fig 1.1 Proposal for Initial Ideation

After presented my proposal, I have decided to go with 2nd idea. I have been planning how the design would be formed and develop it further. It was inspired from the music video titled Alien Stage by VIVINOS. The font was unique especiallysince the genre are future sci-fi, cyber looking and alien.
Sir Vinod also suggest too for see references as a inspiration which is from Wim Crouwler font.

2. Digitalization Process on Illustrator

Fig 2.1 The progress & Idea sketches

The sketches were done based on the reference images founded. I try to do combination or mixed all the reference to make it more unique and simple. I keep experiment until manage to decided which design was better. As Igot the feedback from my lecturer the 4th slide more nice then the others and I rush expand it all the design until it's all finished.

Fig 2.3 Uppercase & Lowercase Letter Structure

In this stage I complete the structure while keep following the instructions as it more easy to do lowercase when put it beside the uppercase. I try my best make the thickness consistent un order to look much better and balanced.

Fig 2.5 Numerals (Punctuations left) Structure

Once the uppercase and the lowercase was completed and fixed the thickness, I go for continued as our lecturer lead us and we need to complete numerals (punctuations left). First, I copy paste the upper and lower case to the page along put the ruler grid, then I try to follow the rules on how to make the numerals (punctuations left). Even checked many times if what am I doing and the structure was correct, also try my best to make the thickness consistent.

This is the first finished design, but somehow our lecturer asked me to fix some of the part and suggested to make it same shape. As I checked, I have problems with fixing V, W, X, and Y. It need to fix the thickness and the proper position of the font to make it nice and clear.

3. Importing To Fontlab

Fig 3.1 Metrics Tab

Fig 3.2 Process of Kerning on Fontlab7

I imported some letters into Fontlab7, changed them so they looked nice, and then made sure to make the space between the letters on the left side to make it consistent, so that it was easy to read and not awkward looking.

4. Design Application

I using alien themed and futuristic space for my font theme as a a representetive of how this font can be used for writing titles of the movie and website that connects with alien or futuristic themed.

Presentation Slide
This presentation slides for represent the font to give it the center of outstanding and samples. Themed futuristic and alien font named Aliematic Stage Regular. I even shows how this font can be used for even do the close up for each the upper-case, lower-case, numericals and even when it used to type a sentence.

Feedback

Week 14 :
  • General Feedback : Finish Eportfolio and Final Compilation & Reflection.

  • Specific Feedback : Overall, it's already good the design because the colour was consistent and so I may proceed with the eportfolio to finish this final assessment.

Week 13 :
  • General Feedback : Continue make the poster presentation until finish.

  • Specific Feedback : Do it by myself while try to think the idea. For the Application try to make the colour consistent.

Week 12 :
  • General Feedback : See the example from the seniors presentation.

  • Specific Feedback : Try to add something variant and make it not same boring design presentation. Dont add too much complicated design especially for the background.

Week 11 :
  • General Feedback : Continue what we are doing from week 10 and apply the design font to fontlab.

  • Specific Feedback : Fix the curve and line, try adjust the thickness.

Week 10 :
  • General Feedback : When creating small letters, place them next to capital letters to see how their lines, height, and shapes are different.

  • Specific Feedback : Make the thickness consistent.
Week 9 :
  • General Feed back : Make sure to explain what you're doing in task 3 and why you're doing it. This includes sharing your thoughts, any issues you've encountered, and how you've resolved them.

  • Specific Feedback : I manage to get a chanve for presented the proposal even I missed the last week compulsery meeting. I decided to go for Alien mixed Cyber or Futuristic font as an inspiration for this project.  As I explore all the design, the 2nd page was well made and so Lecturer agree with it and so I go with the 2nd design experiment I made.
Week 8 :
  • General & Specific Feedback : I didn't attend the meeting cause it's not compulsery and also holiday for 1 week.

Reflection
  • Experience :
In my experience, I faced challenges in generating ideas and designing the font type, especially because I chose a futuristic and alien theme. Shaping the letters V, W, X, and Y consistently with the desired thickness was particularly tricky. I also had difficulties in figuring out how to present my font type. After several discussions with the lecturer, I eventually found a valid approach. Once it was approved, I applied the font to the Alien movie to match the themed vibe.

  • Observation :
What got me really into it was designing the font type. I tried to make it personal and original, drawing inspiration from various sources. Even though I looked at other pieces for ideas, I wanted to give it my own twist. I enjoyed exploring and being unique, especially because I love the futuristic and alien themes, they just seem really cool to me.

  • Finding :
While working on the design, I found that my font isn't only good for movie titles. It also works well for websites that have a futuristic and alien theme. I also discovered it suits poster titles and novel titles. Even though it seems limited to futuristic and alien styles, it surprisingly fits well with modern vibes.
