Task 2: Key Artwork and Collateral

Lectures :
Instructions :

Task
1. Task 2 A—Key Artwork

For this task, we are instructed to design a key artwork that represents a part of ourselves and we can use the initials of our name, or nickname or first name.

  • Explore and compose as many permutations and combinations of your name in the form of a wordmark/lettering. The final key artwork must be an elegant solution, well balanced and composed, not complicated or confusing that leads to a functional and communicable key artwork. This key artwork will subsequently be used in Task 2(B) collateral.

  • Task 2(A) and 2(B) will require you to explore the boundaries of typographic communication using the knowledge gained from all modules not withstanding this semester’s exercises of Typographic Systems and Type & Play. Synthesise the knowledge and create a key artwork that excites and memorable.
Ideas for Key Artwork

Fig 1.1 First Idea

In this design, I drew inspiration from a cyber-futuristic theme blended with an alien font. I incorporated black and white shapes, along with distorted elements, to achieve the perfect look I had envisioned.

However, after receiving feedback from my lecturer, I realized that there were areas that needed improvement, especially regarding the stroke size and line thickness. I promptly took this feedback into consideration and decided to create a completely new design.

Fig 1.2 Second Attempt Idea

After receiving the feedback, I made an effort to rework the design and created a second version to achieve a cleaner look. However, it seems that our lecturer still noticed some issues or areas that needed further refinement, including the use of a grid.

Fig 1.3 Third Attempt

In the end, after numerous attempts and with guidance from our lecturer's valuable suggestions, I have achieved the final version of the key artwork design

Colour Palette

Fig 1.4 Colour Palettes

For my colour palette I decided to go with a more Dark Turquois colour palette as I resonate with the colour cyan and both those colours resemble cyber future mixed alien themes and myself too.

Brand Identity - Self-portrait

Fig 1.7 Brand Identity - Self-portrait Explorations

For this part, I took a self-portrait of myself and converted it to black and white. Afterward, I incorporated a color layer using my chosen color palette.

Collaterals

I searched for images such as bag, sweater and mug on Pinterest and edited them by incorporating my logo into them.

When it comes with animating there are 2 choices, using After Effect or Make a base in Illustration and covert the process in Photoshop.

Layout on Instagram

Fig 1.18 Instagram Layout #1

In our important extra job, we're told to make an Instagram account and organize the pictures I created in a special way with a 9-grid layout.
But somehow the design was too repetitive especially when it comes with try to representetive focusing on the brand name.

As I recieved the feedback, I rushed edit and made a changes especially for the layouts element and this is the final design that shown in instagram layout. But still the other elements I need to fix it again.

Feedbacks

Week 4 :
  • General Feedback : Our lecturer told us the matter was how the design of the watermark represent of us with the meaning and how is it very worthy.

  • Specific Feedback : In the early design it can be good or bad but try to explore more the design with the good value. As i changed into cyber themed, Lecturer suggest that i can inspired from the person who create cyber font themed.
Week 5 :
  • General Feedback : No Feed

  • Specific Feedback : Fix some part of the letter and use grid and smart guides to fulfill same portion of thickness.
Week 6 :
  •  General Feedback : Expand the work mark into identity

  • Specific Feedback : The letter has to be strong and outstanding

Reflections
  • Experience
I felt unsure when starting the first task because I didn't know how to include my name in my own identity. Most of my initial ideas didn't meet my standards, but I eventually tried different approaches. I experimented with various forms after using a similar one for my first two attempts, and this led to more distinct designs. As I moved on to the second part of the task, I began to appreciate it more. I had fun creating different prototypes and playing with different color combinations and designs.
  • Observation
During the task, I noticed that colors can appear differently depending on the background they are placed on. I had the chance to experiment with this aspect while creating various designs using 2 different applications. It became clear to me that unique elements and features in a central artwork representing your identity can leave a memory.
  • Finding
The main thing I learned from this task is that whenever you make a choice in a design, even if it's something tiny like putting a little thing in the corner of the page, you should think about how it fits in and what it means in that specific context. You should always keep in mind the message you want to send with your design and also think about it from a design point of view, considering the rules and principles of design.

Fig 2.2 Describing Letterforms

I've gained an understanding of the extensive history of typography, spanning a remarkable 500 years. Throughout this extensive period, typography has evolved significantly, giving rise to a multitude of intricate technical terms. These terms encapsulate the various aspects and nuances of typography, encompassing everything from typefaces and font families to kerning, leading, tracking, and so much more. Delving into this realm has allowed me to appreciate the depth and complexity of typography as an art and a science, demonstrating its crucial role in communication, design, and the dissemination of information over centuries.

Fig 2.3 Describing Typefaces

Typefaces, also known as fonts, are fundamental components of written communication and design, shaping the visual expression of written language. They play a crucial role in conveying a message, evoking emotions, and establishing the overall aesthetic of a piece.
